What should I be dosing in reef tank? ›

The most common application in a reef tank is two-part dosing to maintain calcium and alkalinity levels but is also done to maintain the correct ratio of minor and trace elements. Without the right elements in the water, corals will ultimately suffer and eventually perish because they use the elements to grow.

As a rule of thumb, the MINIMUM power of the selected pump should be about 10 times the volume of the tank per hour; for a tank stocked exclusively with SPS corals, it is better to use 30 to 50 times that.

Dosage: Start with a daily dose of 5 ml of Tropic Marin® All-For-Reef per 100 liters (26 US-gal) of aquarium system volume. Increase the daily dosage weekly by 2.5 ml per 100 l (26 US-gal) aquarium volume until you reach constant alkalinity and calcium concentrations.

Yes! Although somewhat rare, it is indeed very possible to over-filter your water.

It is generally very safe as long as it is not overdosed and is always used with a protein skimmer. Carbon dosing will help coral growth and coloration by lowering excess nutrient levels. Due to the low cost and overall effectiveness for most tanks, it's something most aquarists should consider.

Proper vinegar dosing will decrease nitrate levels by increasing bacterial populations, which are then skimmed out removing the nitrate within their cells.

pH Levels In Reef Aquariums

In reef aquariums containing corals, hobbyists maintain great success at a pH range of 7.8 to 8.5 with an alkalinity between 120 and 200 ppm. Within this range, we know it is best to keep things as stable as possible but some fluctuation is going to happen.

Recommended Ranges. In a reef tank, Phosphate levels should be between 0.03-0.2 PPM. However, older established aquariums can do quite well with phosphate levels of up to 2.0 ppm!

In your reef tank, you can aim for the range of 1200-1400 ppm. 6) Phosphate: Phosphates occur naturally on reefs in their natural habitats, where they are usually present at levels around 13 ppm.

For soft corals and LPS corals aim for at least 20 times turn over, and for SPS corals, at least 50 times tank volume turnover per hour. So for a 250 litre reef tank, it needs a minimum flow of 5000lph and for SPS corals it would need 12500lph.
