How good are the Chargers? ›

The Chargers played in San Diego from 1961 until the end of the 2016 season, before relocating back to Los Angeles, where the franchise had played its inaugural 1960 season.

As of the end of the 2023 season, the Chargers have played 64 seasons, with a cumulative record of 483–489–11 in the regular season and 12–19 in the postseason.

Team History

The Chargers were founded by Barron Hilton in Los Angeles in 1959. Due to competition from the Los Angeles Rams, the team moved 120 miles south to San Diego in 1961. As part of the AFL, the Chargers enjoyed high-scoring years from 1961 to 1965, winning four AFL West titles and one AFL championship.

Sikkema also considered Slater, Ekeler and Mack, but ultimately felt as though James, Herbert and Bosa are the best three when healthy. James and Bosa are some of the longer tenured Chargers on the roster, with each entering their sixth and eighth seasons in the powder blue, respectively.

Under the lease's terms, the Chargers assumed almost no financial risk (though the NFL's relocation fee is costing the club $650 million). Not just in San Diego but elsewhere in California, it had become much more difficult to obtain the massive stadium subsidies the NFL could command in other states.

Although the Chargers have never won a Super Bowl, they have played in one. Following the 1994 season, the Chargers got blown out 49-26 by the 49ers in Super Bowl XXIX, which still represents their only appearance in the NFL's biggest game.
